Each year, hundreds of stakeholders in scientific computing make the same decision: to financially support the development and sustainability of dozens of the most essential open source software tools in this space. This past year was no different.

In 2021, 560 individuals and at least 60 different corporations generously donated money to NumFOCUS. Additionally, more than 2,000 individuals attended PyData Global, further contributing monetarily to our work. NumFOCUS and our Projects also received support from three private foundations: The Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

For the third year in a row, our Year-End Fundraiser rallied our community around the idea that even a relatively small gift can make a big impact. Through their sponsorships, Google Open Source, along with our other Year-End corporate partners, made possible a 2-for-1 match of individual donations. This demonstrated their commitment to the belief that stakeholders of all types have a role to play in keeping scientific computing open and accessible for everyone. Our 2021 Year-End Fundraiser brought in a total of $43,337 in individual gifts.

NumFOCUS celebrates our 10th anniversary in 2022, and we have exciting developments on the horizon. The support we have received from our community, particularly during last month’s Year-End Fundraiser, have offered us the resources we need to continue providing outstanding service to our Projects as well as to take bold steps in important new directions. We look forward to sharing more with you over the coming weeks.

An updated list of our individual donors may be found here, and our corporate sponsor recognition page includes those corporate partners who have sponsored NumFOCUS and our Projects into 2022. For more details on our network of support as well as our many programmatic accomplishments this past year, please watch for our 2021 Impact Report, which we plan to release in early February.

Finally, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you from the entire NumFOCUS team for all that you do to make our continued successes possible. We hope you’ll work with us to power more scientific innovation this year!
