Join our team as the Project DEI Coordinator.

The primary role of the Project DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Coordinator is to work closely with our open-source data science projects on testing DEI best practices and helping to develop a peer mentoring and leadership training program for scientific open-source project leaders. They will serve as a resource for projects and a liaison to ensure the ongoing work of the Diversity & Inclusion in Scientific Computing (DISC) Committee reflects and addresses project DEI needs. As we begin our Project Incubation Program, they will ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices are introduced in the earliest stages of project growth.

About NumFOCUS

NumFOCUS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes open practices in research, data, and scientific computing by serving as a fiscal sponsor for open-source projects and organizing community-driven educational programs. We are global in scope but operate out of our headquarters in Austin, TX.

You will work with a small team of friendly and dedicated nonprofit professionals. NumFOCUS staff supports the international community of researchers and data scientists whose work accelerates life-changing research and scientific discoveries for a better world. (Our community is made up of lots of incredibly smart and passionate people!)

More information on our mission and programs is available on our website: www.numfocus.org.

Our Core Values are the guiding principles by which NumFOCUS makes decisions and defines our culture.

  • Inclusivity: Commitment to diversity and a welcoming, friendly community.
  • Transparency: Open access creates a collaborative community where the best ideas can come forward.
  • Curiosity: Passion for learning and commitment to scientific inquiry.
  • Collaboration: The best ideas come from a diverse group of individuals working together.

About You

You believe best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion are vital to open-source project sustainability and success. You have an understanding of and are passionate about the value of open-source software. You understand the culture and typical functioning of an open-source software community.

You are an excellent communicator, finding the right words and images to convey your message. If you don’t know how something works, you proactively find the answers and can teach it to yourself well enough to explain it to an unfamiliar audience.

You are patient; you are willing to invest the time necessary to understand where someone is coming from and communicate their needs and perspective to whoever needs to hear them.

You treat others with patience, understanding, and respect — even in frustrating situations.

You are a problem solver. You look for ways to improve things and turn chaos into repeatable processes and systems.

You write things down. You document your process and maintain records so that if space aliens abducted you, we would be sad but still be able to continue operating.

You are a self-starter — capable of working independently and coordinating with colleagues remotely.

What Makes This Job Awesome

Our team works together closely and supports one another to do our best. Work-from-home days are supported and encouraged. Our office vibe is casual and friendly. We value diversity and have staff members from various walks of life and many different passions and pursuits.
