DISC Mission

NumFOCUS recognizes that the open-source data science community is currently highly homogenous. We believe diverse contributors and community members produce better science and projects. The DISC Committee strives to help create a more diverse community through initiatives and programming devoted to increasing participation by and inclusion of underrepresented people.

In previous years, among other initiatives, we organized the DISC Unconference and contributed to proposed standards for the DEI approach to community events in the form of the DISCOVER Cookbook.

For a more detailed explication of NumFOCUS’s position on diversity in the community, see the Diversity Appendix.

About DISC Committee Membership

The purpose of the NumFOCUS DISC committee is to broaden the participation and inclusion of underrepresented groups in the NumFOCUS ecosystem, create and guide the implementation of initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion in NumFOCUS projects, and provide a network of support and collaboration with diverse members of the community.

The work of the DISC Committee will support NumFOCUS’s mission to promote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing and organize community-driven educational programs. The Purpose of the committee also aligns with NumFOCUS’s vision for an inclusive scientific and research community that utilizes actively supported open-source software to make impactful discoveries for a better world.

New DISC Committee Members have ample opportunity to bring their own ideas and energy to the group, in addition to enhancing work on current projects and priorities.

Committee Membership is open to all individuals in the NumFOCUS projects and their communities. Familiarity with NumFOCUS projects and programs is helpful.

In 2024, the Committee will be electing up to six new members. DISC Committee members serve 2-year terms, with an option for unlimited renewal.

DISC Committee Members are first nominated by the community and then invited to fill out an application. The current DISC Committee will vote in the new members on the basis of their applications.

Committee Responsibilities

Committee Members can expect to devote 4–5 hours a month to work on behalf of the DISC Committee.

Generally, this work takes the form of one monthly meeting plus research work, reading, participating in Slack and email discussions, etc. There is always an opportunity to do more if you have the time and inclination!

Nominations are open!

Please nominate individuals who would bring an important perspective to the work of the DISC Committee. Self-nominations are welcome.
