NumFOCUS is seeking volunteers to serve on our newly created Affiliated Project Selection Committee! Affiliated Projects are open source scientific computing projects which benefit from their association with NumFOCUS through community access, Small Development Grants and Google Summer of Code funding opportunities, and promotion throughout our network.

The Selection Committee will work with NumFOCUS staff and our Board of Directors to facilitate the selection of new Affiliated Projects. General responsibilities of the committee include running the selection process, proposing changes to the application and selection criteria to the Board of Directors, and guiding prospective projects on the application process.

The committee will consist of at least 5 members from the NumFOCUS at-large community, with the following constraints:

  • At least 1 member is a contributor to a NumFOCUS sponsored project,
  • At least 1 member is a contributor to a NumFOCUS Affiliated project,
  • No 2 members are associated through employment or a NumFOCUS project leadership committee, and
  • 1 member is a NumFOCUS staff member

In the event we have more volunteers than needed we will reach out with additional opportunities for involvement including the planning of a project incubation program.

Each member will be asked to serve a 2-year term, with the option for unlimited renewals. Applications for Affiliated project status are accepted and reviewed quarterly. Members will need to be available for ~4–6 hours during the following application periods:

Round 1: January 15 — February 29

Round 2: April 15 — May 31

Round 3: July 15 — August 31

Round 4: October 15 — November 30

The Selection Committee will review applications using the criteria listed below. Additional details on each requirement can be found on the NF website.

  • Be scientifically oriented: The project is an active contributor to our mission of scientific research.
  • Be open: The project must be led openly
  • Be kind: The project must be inclusive of all peoples.
