
GDAL is an access and translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats, often known as the Swiss army knife of geospatial. It is released under an X/MIT style Open Source License.
The project has been governed since 2006 by a diverse Project Steering Committee (PSC) with a charter under the auspices of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo). Joining NumFOCUS, GDAL will have access to the beneficial services of a non-profit fiscal sponsor and a valuable connection with NumFOCUS’s project network of foundational data science and scientific computing tools.

The Board of Directors provides oversight and guidance to ensure NumFOCUS stays aligned with its mission and values in addition to complying with all federal and state laws. Specifically, the Board of Directors has legal, financial, management, and program oversight.
NumFOCUS is looking for directors who have a demonstrated dedication to the betterment of science through open source software. We welcome and strongly encourage participation by people of all backgrounds and identities.

NumFOCUS is seeking volunteers to serve on our newly created Affiliated Project Selection Committee! Affiliated Projects are open source scientific computing projects which benefit from their association with NumFOCUS through community access, Small Development Grants and Google Summer of Code funding opportunities, and promotion throughout our network.

The Selection Committee will work with NumFOCUS staff and our Board of Directors to facilitate the selection of new Affiliated Projects. General responsibilities of the committee include running the selection process, proposing changes to the application and selection criteria to the Board of Directors, and guiding prospective projects on the application process.
